Sentence came July 12 from District Judge M. Douglas Hughes in Amite, according to DA Scott Perrilloux. Sanchez is a person of interest in the brutal murder of Jaren Lockhart, 22, of Tickfaw and New Orleans. The mother of a three-year old was a sometime dancer who disappeared with Sanchez and companion Terry Christopher Speaks, 39, both of Kenner.
The Margaret Sanchez case may be the one that many in the Amite area judicial system wish would just go away--to another jurisdiction. Sanchez is a person of interest in the murder of Jaren Lockhart of Tickfaw and New Orleans.
“She can bond out at $35,000 with her father or anybody else,” said District Public Defender Reggie McIntyre earlier. “I think it should be out of Tangipahoa Parish,” he said.
“A lot of other people think so too.” He was clearly unhappy with the high bond Sanchez faced--and the bond was reduced Thursday, June 28 by District Judge Ernie Drake from $250,000 to $35,000.
McIntyre thinks staff of District Attorney Scott Perrilloux will have a tough time proving that Sanchez knew that companion Terry Speaks was a known sex offender.
“They have to show that she knew or should have known about his conviction of indecent liberties with a minor,” he said. Speaks had a warrant for not registering as a sex offender for that offense--and Speaks agreed leave Louisiana to return to North Carolina to face that warrant.
McIntyre said June 29 there is no hold on Sanchez from lead investigative agency, the Hancock County Sheriff, that would prevent her release on bail from the Tangipahoa Parish Jail. “There never was a hold on her.”
Hancock authorities talked with his office a week or so ago.
The Public Defender’s office has met with Sanchez at length. “She has been talking to her dad a lot. That was her dad’s mother’s home that they searched in Jefferson Parish. They didn’t find anything.”
The murder of a young mother and sometime dancer is a triangulation with possible evidence being sought in Orleans, Jefferson and Hancock County, involving at one time 11 different agencies.
Because the pair was nabbed in Loranger, Tangipahoa has drawn unwanted attention and extra staff time.
