A Big Mystery

Perhaps the most debated name origin in the parish is that of Amite. It is also one of the most mysterious. Despite appearing nearly unchanged on maps for three hundred years, the meaning has remained elusive and has led to much speculation over the years. However, based on old maps, I can state with confidence that the pronunciation used by locals,

“A-mit”, is how the word should be pronounced despite the “e” on the end. Part of the mystery surrounding Amite is why the town was even named that when the Amite River, from which it takes its name, is nearly thirty miles away. As I continue to research the Parish’s extensive history, I hope to discover the truth, but that is a discussion for a future article.
