Amite's Famous Alligator

Dating back to 1948, The Amite Fire Department is the oldest fire protection district in the state of Louisiana, beginning with four employees and many volunteers. Today there are 19 full-time firemen between the two stations in downtown Amite and on Hwy. 16 West. Fire Chief of TP Fire District #1 Bruce Cutrer has been part of the department since1963 and his admiration for the first chief, J.H. Binder is quite evident as he relays great stories of the early days.
I had dropped by the station to talk about "Charlie" the department mascot, and longtime city tourist attraction, but Bruce wouldn't start there. Instead he went back forty years ago to tell me how the first alligator came to live with the firemen.
