TPSO Press Release - 8.1 - SCAM Alert
HAMMOND, LA. - August 1, 2018 - Tangipahoa Parish Sheriff Daniel Edwards warns the public, "Scammers are making the rounds once again, targeting Tangipahoa Parish residents with threats of legal action and arrest."
The Tangipahoa Parish Sheriff's Office has received numerous reports from residents who received phone calls from scammers advising that they are in some type of legal trouble or have outstanding warrants for their arrest from local to out of state jurisdictions, as well as IRS liens and that they need to send money right away to clear the matter up.
Residents are reminded that these types of calls are typical SCAMS intended to cause harm and you should never give these callers any personal, bank or credit card information.
These types of scammers have also been known to use a spoof phone number to appear that it is a local call. They have called may residents stating that they have missed court, have an arrest warrant or a relative has been arrested and needs money to get out of jail. All SCAMS! We ask that you don't fall prey.
Sheriff Edwards encourages residents, "If someone receives a suspicious call, we recommend that you simply hang up the phone immediately. Do not ever call back a number provided by the caller."
If you feel like you have been a victim of a scam, please contact the Tangipahoa Parish Sheriff's Office at 985-345-6150.
