No budget, property tax or journal
The Town of Amite City may face a difficult time in the near future as there is currently no approved budget in place, no property tax and, as of now, no official town journal.
The meeting began with the ordinance to accept the millage rate for the tax year of 2017. The ordinance was to renew the tax rate, which would remain at 4.94 mills with the purpose of generating funds for the general operating expenses incurred by the town. The rate has remained unchanged for several years; however, when the motion to accept went to vote, the ordinance failed with three council members voting against and two in favor.
Mayor Buddy Bel then introduced the bids for the town journal. The only bid received came from the Amite Tangi Digest, with a bid of $3.50 per square inch of 100 words to be set in 7-point type for legal notices.
