As The Home Goes, So Goes Society

“As goes the family, so goes society.” (Pope John Paul II) “Your success as a family; our success as a society, depends not on what happens in the White House but on what happens in your house.” (Barbara Bush) Both of those quotes highlight the significance of the family . The family is the building block of society. In the book of Genesis, which is the book of beginnings, the Bible says that just after God created the heavens and the earth, God created the home. God made man, but God recognized that man needed a help-mate.

So, God performed the first surgery in history. He caused Adam to fall into a deep-sleep and he took a rib from Adam’s side and around that rib, God created another human being. When Adam say this new creation, he named her “Woman.” And thus, we have the beginning of the home. Next Sunday, we will celebrate Mother’s Day. It’s a time to express our love for our Moms. It’s a reminder to us that the home is important. Recently I was thinking about the fact that as human beings, our thinking and our values are formed in the first eighteen years of our lives. Think about it… a person may live to be eighty or ninety, yet what we believe throughout our lives has in large part, been shaped in our childhood and adolescent years.
