Lions’ Cortez Honored After Strong Debut

From Southeastern Athletics

FRISCO, Texas – Southeastern Louisiana freshman Adam Cortez was
named the Southland Conference’s Men’s Cross Country Athlete of the
Week for the opening week of the 2017 season, the league announced on
Tuesday.

Cortez, from El Paso, Texas, got his collegiate career started in
impressive fashion with a second-place time of 15 minutes, 27.16
seconds at the New Orleans Invitational at the Lake Oaks Park course
in New Orleans on Friday. Cortez finished just 1.21 seconds behind
winner Stanley Limoh of Lafayette in helping Southeastern finish third
out of six teams.

“I am so proud of Adam for being named conference player of the
week,” Southeastern coach Rocky Capello said. “He is truly deserving
of the honor. His race at UNO was almost flawless. For a true freshman
to be within one second of one of the top runners in the nation is
remarkable. The fact that he was upset about not winning is even more
exciting. I look forward to the next two months to see how he
progresses.”

The honor marks the second straight year a Lion freshman runner has
been recognized by the league for the opening meet. Ben Vasterling was
honored in 2016 after taking first at the UNO Invitational.

Another Southeastern freshman, Tara Stuntz, received honorable
mention recognition for the Women’s Athlete of the Week award. Stuntz
finished sixth in a team-best 19:04.14 in helping the Lady Lions take
third in the six-team field. Abilene Christian’s Michaela Hackett
received the award.

Southland weekly award winners are nominated and voted upon by each
school’s sports information director. Voting for one’s own athletes is
not permitted. To earn honorable mention, a student-athlete must
appear on 25 percent of ballots.

Southland Players of the Week are presented by UniversalCoin.com.

Southeastern returns to action at the LSU Invitational, Saturday,
Sept. 16, at the Highland Road Park course in Baton Rouge.
